The Program

Word, Voice and Mind in Medicine

Master the Art & Science of Personalized Medicine

At this seminar you will learn techniques to:

  • Improve diagnostic precision
  • Sharpen homeopathic prescribing
  • Increase speed & depth of history taking
  • Deepen understanding of each patient
  • Individualize treatment plans
  • Address the root cause of disease

Illness can arise not only from our biology, but also because of the way we think, react, behave and live. As we tune in to our patient's words, vocal habits and unique narrative, our understanding of the core issues deepens, offering the possibility of new, holistic solutions capable of touching the deepest dynamics of each patient's suffering.

This course will examine the significance of words, language and narrative in medicine. As we explore the science of observation itself, we will discover the manifold ways in which patient narrative can be developed, amplified, and transformed into an invaluable guide for holistic, patient- centered healing.

Word

Health care begins with the word of the patient. We will discuss the use of words to convey life-context and time-sensitive meaning, in addition to the well-understood elements of narrative, sensations, beliefs and emotions. Clinical case studies will illustrate how contextual information from our patient can inform and suggest treatment strategies.

Case studies will include:
The wordless case
The obfuscating case
Word symbolism and metaphor - case study
Word choice and the homeopathic repertory - case study

Voice

Voice reflects many aspects of health and disease - whether disturbances arise from physical, physiological, or mental-emotional realms. We will enter into detailed discussion of speech-pattern analysis. Voice quality, pitch, pitch-variability and real-time spectrographic analysis will be used to investigate characteristics of the voice in health and illness. Case studies before and after treatment will show how the voice reflects change in well-being.

Case studies will include:
The acute voice
The voice in cardio-respiratory disease
'Animal', 'plant' and 'mineral' patterns of speech: analysis and treatment implications

Mind

Drawing from the themes of the Word and the Voice in Medicine, we will extend our models for illness to the narrative. Participants will be given new guidance on the identification of hidden etiologies, time-lines, life themes and intrinsic blocks to cure. Each concept will be illustrated with a long case study followed by a practical workshop.

Case studies will include:
'Psychosexual' narratives
'Transformative' narratives
'Crisis points' and the narrative

Optional Workshop: Holistic Care of the Performing Voice

In addition to a presentation on the therapeutics of the voice, there will be an optional group singing activity to illustrate the principles of healthy vocal habits - and give delegates a chance to have some fun!
